About Larchmont UMC Preschool

Larchmont United Methodist Preschool is the longest operating Christian preschool in the Norfolk area.  An outreach ministry of Larchmont United Methodist Church, the preschool offers programming consistent with the best principles and purposes of early childhood education, combined with the objectives of a Christian education.  Founded in 1941 by the pastor's wife and the church administrative council, we focus on the development of the whole child, reaching all of the developmental domains: social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual. Our daily activities include arts and crafts, music, games, story time, fine and gross motor skill development, and chapel. Larchmont UMC Preschool operates September through mid June, closely paralleling the Norfolk Public Schools calendar.  We offer programs for children ages two through kindergarten.

Larchmont UM Preschool operates under a Religious Exemption as obtained through the Virginia Department of Social Services.  We are required to maintain staff ratios, current first aid and CPR certifications, conduct staff trainings and maintain health and safety regulations.

The preschool is located within Larchmont United Methodist Church's education wing in the Larchmont neighborhood of Norfolk, Virginia.

Mission

The Mission of Larchmont United Methodist Preschool is to offer programming consistent with the best principles and purposes of early childhood education, combined with the objectives of a Christian education and world view.

About Larchmont UMC

Life at LUMC revolves around family, and we define family very broadly.  Our definition includes folks who have been members for decades as well as those who entered our doors only just yesterday.  In fact, some of our most active participants are Navy families who will only be with us for a few years during a Norfolk assignment.  Others are from the Old Dominion University community, either students or faculty and staff.  Family may mean a household of one or two, or may mean a multi-generational home.  At our core are approximately 200 households who actively support the church in a multitude of ways but many other families are involved in the life of LUMC.

Our overall membership is getting younger every year. Thus the spiritual growth of our children and our youth is an integral part of LUMC.  Opportunities for learning and fellowship are by no means limited to Sundays!  Much of the information on this web site concerns programs for this age group, but learning and maturation as a Christian can continue later in life.  Our adult programs are offered on Sundays and during the week; in recent years we have offered study series one night a week for finite periods. Take a look around our site, and come visit us.  We promise that we won’t embarrass you or hound you if you come just to check us out.  If, on the other hand, you have a need right now, give us a call at (757) 489-8168 and talk to one of our ministers today.
